The very first step in marketing your business is also where a lot of people get stuck… attracting traffic to your site. It also can be the step that frustrates people the most. We talked a little bit about it here but lets continue the discussion today because let's face it – the fact is that if you build it they will not come…
Here are the three steps to attracting traffic to your site.
Step 1: Make sure your content is helpful to your clients and prospects
Does your information help clients:
-
Save time and money by avoiding mistakes
-
More easily meet their goals
-
Learn something new and useful
Most people who are searching are searching for something. Yes, people do browse around just for fun – but they aren’t likely to land on your site while catching up with friends on Facebook or checking for the latest celebrity gossip. A good way to find out what your customers want is simply to ask them. If you don’t have customers yet – you can learn a lot by lurking in the facebook groups of the people who are leaders in your field. What questions are people asking? You can even write blog posts to answer them and point people to your website for more information.
Step 2: Be Part of the Community
One of the best ways to get noticed online is to participate. Don’t just post to your blog and expect people to magically come, read and comment. Go to other people’s blogs, comment on them, share interesting content on social media. Sharing good content gets you noticed by the content creators, and by your audience who begins to see YOU as the expert.
One of the easiest ways to get involved in a community is to join a challenge (like the Ultimate Blog Challenge) or the Launch Your Product in 30 days challenge I’m running in August. Facebook groups are another great place to share your content – and to comment and share other people’s content.
Step 3: Measure Your Results
What you measure expands. The minute you start setting goals and tracking results – your results improve (often without you making any changes). However, the real magic starts to happen when you make tweaks and measure the results. I’ve heard it said that most businesses are only 12 tweaks away from breakthrough success.
Bonus Tip: Rinse and Repeat
If you find something that is working for you – keep doing it until it stops working for you. Don’t be mesmerized by the new – when what you are doing is bringing you good results.
Sometimes though, it is hard to see what is working and what isn’t. I would like to help you. I have a few spaces for free 30 minute social media conversion sessions. The slots are limited – so you need to apply for them. Click here for the application form.
Awesome advice Michele! I always try to be where the action is. UBC has gotten me back in the habit of reading other blogs and actively participating in communities outside of my own!
