shacklesDo you sometimes feel like you are working harder for less money now that you own a business than you ever did when you last had a job?  Does the promise of a steady pay check in exchange for just showing up for work (no matter how soul sucking the work is…) sometimes appeal to you even though you've put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into your business?

Before you throw in the towel… read this blog post.

In honor of Labor Day, I am going to share with you 3 ways to quit your self-employment J-O-B and become the business owner that you truly are and deserve to be.  Believe me, once you've made that leap, and see that you can share your expertise, make much more money and not be shackled to your computer and cell phone – you will never go back!

Step 1:  Realize that your primary job is not ‘doing' your business.  (If you are a virtual assistant, web designer or other hours for dollars service professional – pay attention!)  Yes, people are hiring your company to get them a result.  Your job is to figure out how to get that result in a way that delights your customer.  Your customer does not care who is actually doing the work.  Create a system based on what works for your clients.  Teach other people how to do it (you'll be helping them too!).

Step 2: Learn how to have a sales conversation Your primary job (especially in the beginning) is to be front man and salesperson for your business.  To do that you are going to have to learn how to have a sales conversation.   There are two ways to learn how to sell better (and I think you should be doing both).  One is to invest in some training (I'm holding an event in Houston at the end of this month and we will be covering sales in depth – click here for more info).  The other way is to practice.  You need to get people to schedule strategy sessions with you.  The more conversations you have the easier it gets.  Make a goal to have 100 sales conversations before the end of the year.  I guarantee if you do, you'll have many new clients in 2014.

Step 3: Don't Geek Out!  Your job as the expert is to create systems that get results for clients and to make sales.  It is not to create opt-ins, wrangle with Infusionsoft, send out call reminders, etc.  There are people who LOVE to do this sort of thing – rather than getting yourself in a tailspin trying to figure out WordPress – just hire someone to do it for you.  Even if you are at the beginning of your business and don't have a big budget – someone who knows what they are doing can take care of what you need very quickly and inexpensively – leaving you more time to get results for your clients.

Why should you even think about spending 3 days with me in Houston?

1.  If you are at all like me, you find it hard to work on your business when you are constantly working in your business.  I go to at least 6 events a year and that is planning time for me – I get new strategy, define new process and systems and then implement.  Great brain time!!

2. If you are still reading, I would bet that you are very committed to what you do but you aren't yet hitting it out of the park.  You are not making the money you need or want to make that will create the lifestyle you want.

3. It's time for a change!!!  You know the saying “If you continue to do what you have been doing, you will continue to get what you have been getting.” How are you going to change something when you don't now how to change it.  I can help you figure it all out and put it in a strategy that will get you what you want.
