Oh, where do I even start? As a recovering shopaholic, I was a little concerned about our trip to Zappos. Would I fall off the wagon? Would I have a shoe meltdown? Not to fear – even though there were shoes, there was so much else to check out that I was able to hold my own.
The experience was mind-blowing. I am not even sure if I could explain it to you. The thing that struck me the most was how genuinely happy the people working at Zappos are. When our tour guide was taking us back to the hotel he said “I don't go to work, I hang out all day with my friends.” You know we often hear companies say they support an employee-friendly environment. But that isn't the usual way of doing business. Zappos gets it. That reminds me – last summer I read Tony Hseih's book Delivering Happiness. If you haven't read it – I highly recommend it.
The office environment was wild and fun! Every time you turned a corner there was something else fun to see. I stopped by a desk that was completely covered in sticky notes. When the person assigned to that desk showed back up and I told him I loved his decorations he said that he was out of the office for a few days and his friends were going to punk him but he liked it so much he kept it. I found a video that was made in the office by the employees to help you see what I am talking about.
As the co-creator of the Ultimate Blog Challenge I was totally interested when we walked by what looked like a cardboard bus which was the blogging department. Check out the Zappos blog. How much fun was this!! If you are ever in Vegas you need to take the Zappos tour – it will blog your mind.
Michele,
This sounds like it was so much fun and even somewhat educational. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Debbie – It was so much fun. We missed you 🙂
Hey Lynn – It is definitely like being on a different planet. They definitely could teach a lot of corporations how to lighten up and treat their employees better.
