A trip to the bookstore can help you find your product or signature speech topic

Are you feeling a little stuck coming up with a topic for your next product or signature speech?  Believe me, you are not alone!  I think that most people (especially with their *first* product) battle thoughts like “what could I write about that people what to learn?”  And… that is absolutely the right question to ask – of course you want to create products that your audience wants…

The trouble is, it is easy to get  severely stuck at the “I don't know what to write” stage and never actually create your product.

Coming up with your product is the toughest hurdle…

I can understand why this trips people up.  It is easy to get caught up in all of the nagging questions,

  • What if nobody wants to learn what I'm teaching?
  • Why am I qualified to teach this anyway?
  • Hasn't somebody already done a product on this topic?

In this post, I'm going to show you 5 ways to come up with a topic that makes people want to buy or listen.

5 Tips for Choosing a Winning Topic

1.  What questions are you asked most?  Is there something that people ask you all the time?  For me, most of the questions lately have been about creating your first product and getting speaking gigs.  That's why I'm focusing my blog posts on those topics this month and why I've created this product

2. What is your audience typing into Google to find out more about your topic?  You find this out by doing some keyword analysis.  The easiest way to get started with that is to go to the Google keyword tool and look for keywords with lots of searches.

3. Ask your audience This is a simple suggestion that most people don't do.  It is easy enough to create a quick Facebook poll or to us a tool like Survey Monkey to find out what your audience wants.  If your audience is small – just ask them via e-mail or social media what they would be interested in learning from you.

4. Borrow somebody else's audience – If your audience is small (or even if it isn't) you can borrow someone elses… Spend some time on Linked In, Quora, Facebook, forums  and other places where people ask questions.  The questions provide great topics for blog posts.

5.  What are the big dogs talking about?  Spend some time following the leaders of your niche – what are they talking about?  What topics are being covered in industry and association magazines?  For that matter, what articles are being written for print magazines (can we say field trip to the bookstore!).  You can often take these topics and tailor them to your audience.
