I can not tell you how many times I have heard business coaches and mentors saying “To build a business you must start a movement!” To tell you the truth, when I would hear that I had no clue what they were talking about. They weren’t telling me how to start a movement just that I needed to.
A couple of years ago I found this great Ted Talks video. I had recently read a fabulous book called “Anything You Want” by Derek Sivers and I was googling him to see what else I could find.
There are so many important lessons in that video. Notice that a movement starts with one person. I love this line “The first follower is what transforms the lone nut into a leader.” Then you will see that the first follower shows others that they can follow. A movement must be public. That’s the important part. Is your movement public? Do people know what you are doing and what you stand for?
You will notice at one point that the crowd really starts to grow quickly and there comes a point where if you are not part of the crowd you are actually going to be the one that stands out. At that point, those that don’t belong, run the risk of being ridiculed for not belonging.
My own experience has been just like this, although it took way longer than the 3 minutes at this concert. That first year, I had a few followers truly commit to what I was doing. They were consistently showing up for my webinars and reading my blog posts. And then the second and third year the crowd began to really grow. That is also when I started to see those first followers starting to spend more money with me. I had finally hit the tipping point where I was seeing exponential growth in this movement.
So how do you start your own movement?
- Find that first follower!
- Make your movement public!
- Stay committed and put in the time. You will see the community grow and once you hit the tipping point it will build exponentially.
